چکیده

We consider how to optimize memory use and computation time in operating a quantum computer. In particular, we estimate the number of memory qubits and the number of operations required to perform factorization, using the algorithm suggested by Shor. A K-bit number can be factored in time of order K3 using a machine capable of storing 5K+1 qubits. Evaluation of the modular exponential function (the bottleneck of Shor’s algorithm) could be achieved with about 72K3 elementary quantum gates; implementation using a linear ion trap would require about 396K3 laser pulses. A proof-of-principle demonstration of quantum factoring (factorization of 15) could be performed with only 6 trapped ions and 38 laser pulses. Though the ion trap may never be a useful computer, it will be a powerful device for exploring experimentally the properties of entangled quantum states. QIP Note: On the Quantum Fourier Transform and Applications

This note introduces Fourier transforms over finite Abelian groups, and shows how this can be used to find the period of any efficiently computable periodic function. This in particular implies an efficient quantum algorithm for factoring. In the appendix we show how this generalizes to solving the hidden subgroup problem in any Abelian group. Efficient quantum algorithms for discrete log (and ...

Quantum computation and Shor’s factoring algorithm

Current technology is beginning to allow us to manipulate rather than just observe individual quantum phenomena. This opens up the possibility of exploiting quantum effects to perform computations beyond the scope of any classical computer. Recently Peter Shor discovered an efficient algorithm for factoring whole numbers, which uses characteristically quantum effects. The algorithm illustrates ...

Exact Analyses of Computational Time for Factoring in Quantum Computers

We evaluate the exact number of gates for circuits of Shor’s factoring algorithm. We estimate the running time for factoring a large composite such as 576 and 1024 bit numbers by appropriately setting gate operation time. For example, we show that on the condition that each elementary gate is operated within 50 μsec, the running time for factoring 576 bit number is 1 month even if the most effe...

Quantum algorithms for algebraic problems

Quantum computers can execute algorithms that dramatically outperform classical computation. As the best-known example, Shor discovered an efficient quantum algorithm for factoring integers, whereas factoring appears to be difficult for classical computers. Understanding what other computational problems can be solved significantly faster using quantum algorithms is one of the major challenges ...

Quantum Electronic Devices Based on Metal-Dielectric Transition in Low-Dimensional Quantum Structures

1. Introduction. Recently P. Shor [1] discovered an efficient quantum " polynomial-time algorithm " (length (lg 2 N) k for some finite k) for factoring large numbers N in the form of a product of prime factors. This event makes the implementation of more efficient quantum gates (see [2]) an actual problem of quantum engineering. The quality of the implementation of the gates is characterized by...
